Kini, is a quaint fishing village in Syros’ western part, just 9km away from Hermoupolis. Its sandy stretch has been awarded a Blue Flag status, proof of crystal clear waters and a beach with full amenities. Take your pick of beachfront taverns, restaurants, and cafés where you can enjoy Kini’s one-of-a-kind sunset while sipping on your coffee or ouzo.On your way to the village you will come across the monastery of Aghia Varvara. Built in the previous century, the monastery is home to remarkably crafted icons depicting the life of the saint. It also houses an exhibition of hand-woven textiles, all made on a traditional loom.
Atop the hill of the village, the Church of the Assumption celebrates the Assumption of the Mother of God on August 15.

A hundred meters off the beach, visitors to the area have the rare opportunity to browse around a museum unique throughout the Cyclades, the “Museum of Fishing Vessels, Tools, Aquatic organisms and Shells”.

Cultural activities at Kini also follow a brisk pace. Throughout summer there is a wealth of events and exhibitions organized by the Kini Nautical, Ecological & Cultural Association.

The Festival of Aghios Petros is celebrated annually on June 29. It embraces locals and visitors alike and is enormously popular. The religious custom of the celebration involves a rather unusual kind of procession during which the icon of Aghios Petros is placed on a traditional fishing boat which sails round the cove of Kini, accompanied by other fishing vessels festively decorated. The festival is not without its share of great food: there’s wine, fish soup, and paella for everyone attending this festival where the fun of live music, singing, and dancing never ends.

Another local custom at Kini is “Fotarides” celebrated annually on August 15. Each family decorates its home’s terrace ridges with lit jack-o’-lanterns fashioned out of tin cans. The children are placed in charge of decorating the beach and stone benches.
